The Hancock Genealogical Society was founded in 1986, to offer our members sources of information and research ideas while working on their family genealogies. The society has no archives per se as its collection has been donated to the Ellsworth Public Library as part of the Alvin S. Whitmore Memorial Collection. Although we are considered a chapter of The Maine Genealogical Society, you do not need to belong to one to join the other.

Meetings

Our meetings are held the third Saturday of each month at the Ellsworth Public Library starting at 2:30 p.m. The library is located at 20 State Street, in downtown Ellsworth. At many meetings, members are treated to a guest speaker who discusses topics such as local sources, court documents, town histories and more. We do not meet in December due to the holidays.

This year our Annual Genealogy Fair will be held July 19th at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on the Beechland Road in Ellsworth from 9:00AM to 2:00PM. The public is always welcome and we encourage you to bring your own genealogies and questions. There is no charge to attend and refreshments are available for a modest price.

For more information, please contact Patti Leland, President, at pattileland@roadrunner.com.

Membership

At present we have approximately 100 members. Our dues are only $10.00 per year for all ages. If you would like to become a member, please send a ten dollar check to our treasurer (her name and address are below), along with your name, address, telephone number, email address, and the surnames and locations of your ancestors. We have members nationwide searching for roots here in Maine, and local members searching for ancestors in England, France, Germany, Italy and beyond. Our membership form may be found here. (Note: You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader to read the form.) Adobe® Acrobat® Reader™ is free software that lets you view and print Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) files. If you don't already have it installed on your computer, you may download it from this link: Get Adobe Acrobat Reader
