Child Protective Services DHS (677-1600) 17 Eastward Ln.
This facility investigates allegations of neglect or abuse in the home. The main goal is to work with the families by providing education, counseling, etc. When necessary, the children are removed from the home and placed in foster care or if parental rights are terminated, the children may be placed for adoption.

Community Health and Counseling (667-2061) 204 Water St.
This agency provides foster care services, counseling, and education for families at risk.

Families and Children Together (FACT) (667-3506) 95 Main St.
This agency provides therapeutic foster care services, adoption, parent education as well as supervised visitation services for biological parents and families when applicable.

Kidspeace National Centers for kids in Crisis (667-0909) Rate. 180 Ellsworth
This facility is for children with severe emotional or behavioral problems. It offers a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary diagnostic program. Children are referred and those who are brought in are admitted for a 45 day individual diagnostic process. Eleven children at a time may attend school in the programs classroom and receive short term counseling and therapy while having contact with their families.
The diagnostic acute care program deals with children 8-18 who have social and emotional issues or are developmentally delayed including those with dysfunctional behavior patterns or mild neurological impairment or needing 24 hour supervision. The 45 bed center offers residential treatment for children 8-18.

Nightingale, Stephen M. M.D. (667-2422) 125 Oak St.
Specialty: Internal medicine, pediatrics, women’s health, occupational/industrial medicine, sports medicine, physical therapy and rehabilitation, fitness and wellness center. Medicaid is accepted for patients only if under the age of 18.


Home Health Services


Downeast Health Services (667-5305) Christian Ridge Rd.
The family planning program delivers services with fees based on the sliding fee scale. Medicaid is accepted. Morning, afternoon and evening appointments are available. All services are confidential. The services available for women include breast exams, pelvic exams, pap smears, pregnancy testing and counseling as well as menopausal counseling. Services provided for both men and women include colon cancer screenings, urinalysis and hematocrit, blood pressure screenings, nutrition counseling, referral services, contraceptive supplies (6 months supply), STD testing and treatment, infertility counseling and referral and HIV testing and counseling. Offers Maternal and child health services. Home health services, assessments and education as needed for the mother and the child.

Public Health Nurse (667-1609) 17 Eastward Ln.
Assists families and communities by providing home health services which promote/assist healthy lifestyles through assessment, education, health promotion and prevention. They serve as school nurses, case managers for Tuberculosis patients, elderly patients, prenatal patients, and postpartum patients and their children.

Children’s Residential and Diagnostic Services (667-2061) 204 Water St.
A whole gamut of services for children at risk are provided through this agency. Therapeutic foster care and group homes, one on one case management as well as rehabilitation workers. Treatment plans are derived from a team process which work towards the development of therapeutic goals and implementation of strategic methods of goal completion. Family specialists for things such as anger management, behavioral issues, parenting skills, independent living skills as well as social skills are available.
