needs led by developmental, speech or occupational therapists.
CCO (Child Care Opportunities) (667-2467) Cross Rd.
Responsible for Headstarts in Hancock and Washington counties. They
are a developmental resource center that helps with support of the family
through services such as child care. They are there to help improve the
quality of services in the county.
CDS (Child Development Services) (667-7108) Bangor Rd
This facility helps to identify and serve preschool children ages 0-5
with special needs under the department of education. They provide speech,
physical and occupational therapy, behavioral counseling, and refer services
as needed. Public Health Nursing also refers prematurely born babies to
CDS in order to screen for developmental delays or problems secondary to
premature birth.
Special Children’s Friends (Support Network) (667-2430) 78 Union
Provides programming for preschool children with special needs as well
as home teaching, out reach services, social work services and more.

These services come from the Bangor area and provide service for children
with behavioral issues, mental health issues or mental retardation. They
provide case management services in homes and the community settings. The
work with contracted agencies such as St. Michael’s, Wings, CHCS and Care
Development.

A brokerage firm which assists and sets up services and provides counseling
in home for children with behavioral and mental issues.

Families at risk are referred from C.P.S. to work on needs. Counseling
and services are offered through a thirteen week home based service plan.
C.A.P.E. Child and parent empowerment is a voluntary program designed to
assist families with conflict resolution.

This is a nonprofit non government private corporation which offers
community support programs. They provide services such as their weatherization
program, fix me home repair loans, electric low rate programs, home energy
assistance, child care vouchers and transportation.
Healthworks (1-800-977-6740) / TDD for Hearing Impaired (1-800-977-6741)
Healthworks is one program that holds a contract with Medicaid. This
program finds medicaid providers for people under age 21. They educate
members on benefits of maintaining well checkups, help with scheduling
appointments, transportation and much more.
Big Brothers and Big Sisters (667-5304)
Volunteer mentors work with children from 7-11 for as long as a two
years. This facility offers volunteers to children who may need some aid
and/or support or who for any reason needs or wants interaction from people
outside of the home. People who are available, spend time with other individuals
doing recreational and special activities.
Hancock County Children’s Council (667-5304) Christian Ridge Rd.
This is the child abuse and neglect council for Hancock county. They
provide parenting classes, resources and a lending library for clientele.

Services: Swimming lessons, gymnastics/tumbling, tai kwon do, basketball,
floor hockey and babysitting to name a few. The Y.M.C.A. is funded by the
city and offers 20% discount for Ellsworth citizens and financial aid for
those who need it. There is a full size pool, gym, and fitness center.
They offer many programs from infant to school age and adults. Examples
are children’s cookery classes, interactive reading, aerobics, field trips
such as bowling, ice skating, and hiking. These programs change but there
is always something exciting happening at the Y.M.C.A.
