Well water safety has been a big issue for Hancock county. High arsenic levels in area wells is of concern. Arsenic can cause cancer after long term exposure while in the short term it can cause gastrointestinal irritation. Test kits can be obtained by calling the above number. This service will also test for other substances including fluoride.

Family Assistance Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry (667-4363) 16 High St.
This facility offers food for low income area families and also offers second hand clothing to those in need.

A state funded umbrella of programs serving the communities of Maine and their families. programs: Aspire, Child and Family Services , Elder and Adult services. Food stamps/TANF , Public Health Nursing.

Food Stamps (DHS) (667-1600) 17 Eastward Lane
This program provides food stamps for low income households to buy the food they need to promote good health. The amount of food stamps received is based on the Thrifty Food Plan which is the USDA model diet used to project food costs for one month for different household sizes.

Women, Infants and Children (WIC)
Women, infants and children is a special supplemental and nutritional program which provides vouchers to buy healthy foods, nutrition counseling, breastfeeding support and referral services. To be eligible for WIC you must meet income and nutritional guidelines. Women who breastfeed and who are eligible for WIC are eligible up to one year after delivery. Non breast feeding women and who are eligible for WIC are eligible up to six months after delivery. Infants and children whose families are eligible for WIC are eligible up to age five.

Emmaus Center (667-3962) Main St.
The Emmaus Shelter is run by H.O.M.E. and services those in need of temporary accommodations. They have facilities for individuals and families with an area for cooking. The center does referrals to other social service agencies and provides assistance finding long term placements.

TANF (DHS) (667-1600) 17 Eastward Lane
Temporary Aid for Needy Families replaces AFDC and provides aid to children and families while they work towards independence. Provides temporary income, medicaid, help with preparation and seeking of employment opportunities, help with obtaining child support, child care and transportation.

Aspire (DHS) (667-1600) 17 Eastward Lane
This is a program for people receiving TANF. A variety of services are provided including help obtaining jobs or high school diplomas. Help is provided with expenses such as clothing, school supplies, books, transportation and childcare.

School lunch
There is a school lunch program available to families. It offers reduced or free lunch to students based on the following income guidelines for the 1999-2000 year.

Library:
Ellsworth Public Library (667-6363) 46 State St.
There is a public library with a staff of five and many volunteers who help with a reading outreach program to two elderly housing apartments. They offer a variety of children's story time hours as well. Hours are Mon.-Sat. 10:00-5:00, closed Sundays.

Downeast Family Y.M.C.A. (667-3086)
Services: Swimming lessons, gymnastics/tumbling, tai kwon do, basketball, floor hockey and babysitting to name a few. The Y.M.C.A. is funded by the city and offers 20% discount for Ellsworth citizens and financial aid for those who need it. There is a full size pool, gym, and fitness center. They offer many programs from infant to school age and adults. Examples are children’s cookery classes, interactive reading, aerobics, field trips such as bowling, ice skating, and hiking. These programs change but there is always something exciting happening at the Y.M.C.A.

Ellsworth Community Center
This is a branch of the Y.M.C.A. located at the Mill Mall. Y.M.C.A. membership covers the fee, which is $2.00 per visit for nonmembers. They have pool tables, ping-pong, fooze ball, a play station,, and a computer cluster is forth-coming.
