Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ - Parents FAQ - Students

If my child goes to Liberty School, will they be able to get into a good college?
Our non-traditional grading (students earn "credit" or "no credit" and receive a written evaluation) presents somewhat more work for college admissions offices but on the other hand offer better information than grades. Colleges today focus more on distinguishing interests than on grades and SAT scores. In fact, 300 colleges and universities, including top-rated schools, are documented to accept homeschoolers, who have no transcripts.

Can teenagers handle the amount of freedom Liberty School gives its students?
Some do and some don't. Those who don't have to learn how to handle independence sooner or later, and the only way they can is by practicing. Better now than in college, when the inability to manage one's life can have serious and expensive consequences.

How can my child attend Liberty School if we live outside of commuting distance?
Host family placements are one option (not recommended for freshmen and sophomores). Relocating to the area is another option some families choose. Information on host families and rental housing is available upon request.

FAQ - Students

What about my friends?
Your social life in high school is something that stays with you your whole life, so we agree that it's important. Staying with your friends is one choice. Another way to ensure a good social life is to choose a school that really fits you.

This is what our students have to say:

"It was very easy to make friends here. People here are very friendly. I have never seen anyone come here and not make a friend."

"The Minimesters helped me get to know some of the other students."

"Respect feels good."

"I found Liberty School very welcoming, but scary at the same time because I didn't know people. I made friends very quickly."

"Do what you really want to do. Don't follow the crowd."

"You can be yourself and no one will question you or tell you it's wrong!"

"When I was a freshman, I cared mostly about going where my friends were. When I got to be a sophomore, my priorities changed and I cared more about education and meeting new people. Once you dared to embrace change, you will learn that it's worth it."

"I made friends in about two seconds. Everyone was friendly."

"You'll make tons of friends here, and you can still be friends with your other friends."

"I can be pretty shy and not make close friends quickly, but once I got comfortable, I found everyone to be very friendly."

"Class segregation is non-existent. Seniors are friends with freshmen but rarely think of each other as belonging to classified groups."

What about sports?
Admittedly, our sports program is limited. This is one of the disadvantages of a small school. We offer or have offered soccer, basketball, and cross country. Our students tend to have their own fitness routines --karate, yoga, jogging, biking, etc. Also, some of our special trips and Minimesters feature physical activities.
