Pine Tree Guide Dog Users sponsored the 2007 White Cane Awareness Walk on October 20 at the Maine State Library and Museum.
Roger Katz, the Mayor of Augusta, read a proclamation for White Cane Awareness and joined the walkers for part of the walk. A proclamation from John E. Baldacci, Governor of Maine, was read on his behalf.
Eric Dibner, the ADA Coordinator for the State of Maine, was the keynote speaker. Eric's speech reflected on the subject of acceptance of people with disabilities.
Approximately 25 participants walked the route from the State Museum to the west-side rotary, west to Sewall Street, then south back to the Museum.
Members of the Augusta Lions Club assisted the walkers. They were also joined by Allison Fischang and her mother of Oakland, Maine. Allison, who is 11 years old, is raising a puppy for Guiding Eyes for the Blind, a school for guide dogs located in Yorktown Heights, NY. Allison hopes that the puppy she is working with will someday be a guide dog.
Following the walk, participants enjoyed coffee and bagles, which were generously donated by Baglemania of Augusta. Door prizes were contributed by Denny's Restaurant, Pizza Hut, Margarita's Mexican Restaurant, Mr. Paperback and Kennebec Chocolates.
PTGDU and its members wish to acknowledge and thank all of the donors for their support and their spirit of community involvement.
