Workshop Summary

This is a free workshop created to provide information

to property owners residing on privately

owned roads, including private roads with public

easements. The purpose of the workshop is to

inform property owners in two general areas;

Road Maintenance and Road Ownership Rights

and Responsibilities. The first segment will be

an informational session on the legal issues pertaining

to responsibilities and liabilities as they

pertain to residing on a private road. This will be

presented by Jim Katsiaficas of the law firm Perkins

/ Thompson.

Mr. Katsiaficas will be discussing the limitations

and options regarding private roads. This

includes information on why and how a road association

is formed, how to maintain a road association,

and information on recent legislation

pertaining to road association fees; assessment

and collection. There will be plenty of

opportunity for questions and discussion.

The second segment of the workshop will be an

informational session on road maintenance. This

will be presented by Clyde Walton who will be

discussing general unpaved road maintenance

issues including how to create proper road drainage,

installing culverts, and how to tackle road

problems like potholes and washboard.

There will also be an opportunity to attend a demonstration

of a Front Runner. This equipment is

a road grader/rake that fits onto a snowplow

mount. Participants of this demonstration will be

certified to rent the Front Runner at the extremely

low cost of $50 per week.

Who should attend this workshop? Any person

who has questions or concerns about the condition

of their private road, current road association

members, and private road residents that may be

interested in forming a road association.
