Hours and Location

Sullivan Sorrento Historical Society

Our museum archives are located in the Sullivan Recreational Building located on Route 1. If traveling East, bear right after the bridge; we are only a quarter of a mile farther on the left across from the Fire Department building. We are open on Tuesdays from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. or by appointment. Meetings are open to the public, and are held at 7:30 p.m. on the 3rd Wednesday of the month in May and June. In July and August we meet in the Sorrento Community Building and back to Sullivan for the September meeting. The October meeting place is the "Lights Out". The Historical Societies of our area meet for the last meeting of the year for a potluck supper. Location, time and place to be announced. It's really a lot of fun.

Won't you join us?! Please visit our Events page for our 2005 schedule.

~ A Bit of Trivia ~

Sullivan was originally called Adowaukeag or Waukeag by the Indians who were in this area when the white people first began to settle here. The name means a "horseback" or glacial kame in both the Penobscot and Maliseet languages. Until the place name could be identified, no one knew where the boundaries of De La Mothe-Cadillac's grant were.

The name indicated the great tidal stream from Sullivan Harbor that fills Taunton, Egypt, and Hog Bays, and specifically, Falls Point, where the glacial kame crosses the river. The name Waukeag indicates "a horseback in a place where the tide runs out very strong."
